CamStudio – Video Screen Capture Software

Cam Studio is an open source FREE video screen capture tool. Cam Studio allows you to capture a video of your computer screen easily and smoothly. You can use this program to create your own video tutorials, capture your gameplay or record your live video mixing in Onyx.  Best of all CamStudio is 100% FREE!

CamStudio gives you a variety of options on how to use the program.  You can capture the entire screen at once or just a small portion of it.  You can also tell the program to follow your mouse so that when recording a smaller area than your screen size it is easy for a viewer to see exactly what your doing.  This comes in really handy for recording video tutorials.

Another nice feature of CamStudio is its ability to insert screen and video annotations into your recordings.  This allows you to emphasize any point your trying to make in your video as well as allow the viewer to clearly seen and understand the information presented to them.  These annotations are easy to create and are triggered by a keystroke while recording.

The one biggest downside I have seen of cam studio is that initially the settings that the program is installed with don’t work on most computers.  You have to manually tweak and manipulate your recording codec, keyframes and your frame rate.  Fourtionately for all you Soft Thoughts readers I have gone ahead and found the settings that have worked best for me.  Without setting up CamStudio correctly you will run into timing issues with your video and audio and your audio will start to lag and skip and just not line up with your video like you want it to.  So for all my registered Soft Thoughts members, here are your optimal CamStudio settings:

  1. Hi,
I did everything you said but I still have the video lagging the audio.

It may work ok for 2 or 3 minute vids but I record up to 2 hours at a time and the lag actually gets worse the further into the video you go…

Do you know of a solution.

    Thanks

  2. What codec are you using???
DivX worked best for me but there are a couple other codecs that will work as well.
Are you on Vista or XP?
